YORBA LINDA — Brea Olinda scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough Friday as Esperanza handed the Wildcats their first loss with a 28-23 Century League victory at Yorba Linda High.
The Wildcats (6-1, 2-1) had not allowed more than 14 points in a game while rolling to their perfect start.
But they had trouble containing Aztecs quarterback Mark Tumlinson, who passed for 324 yards and four touchdowns as the Aztecs improved to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in league and stayed in the hunt for the playoffs.
Tumlinson threw touchdown passes of 76, 11, 45 and 58 yards, finding receiver Nick Catalano for three scores.
The Aztecs slowed the Wildcats’ running back, limiting running back Josh Vizcaya to 161 yards on 27 carries and no touchdowns.
Brea eventually went to its passing game and scored its first touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Nick Ceja found Nicky Feamster for a 10-yard scoring pass with 9:58 remaining to cut Esperanza’s lead, 21-10.
The Aztecs, which led, 14-3 at the half, responded with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Tumlinson to Troy Poole less than two minutes later, pushing their lead to 28-10.
The Wildcats came back and scored a 72-yard touchdown pass from Ceja (14 of 23 for 205 yards) to Derek Anderson on the second play from scrimmage to trim the lead, 28-17 with 7:57 left.
Brea added a final score on Ceja’s 14-yard pass to Anderson, but it wasn’t enough as Esperanza ran out the clock.
